Selling Up, Quitting Work, and Going for a Drive

After far too many years in an office environment, we have decided on taking a 'lifestyle reset' for a while. We are selling up, quitting the 9-to-5, and hitting the road for the ultimate overlanding adventure and challenge.

The mission? To drive our youthful 1960 Series 2 (Ex-Vietnam War) Land Rover from Brisbane (Australia) to Birmingham (UK). We aren't simply driving Australia to UK overland as a direct, one-way trip to the UK; who knows where we will end up or what we will see along the way.

Brisbane to Birmingham Expedition Map

This isn't just about a change of scenery; it's about a change of pace. Swapping fluorescent office lights for starlit deserts and spreadsheets on computer screens for deadlines on ferry timetables. We know that a 68-year-old vehicle doesn't offer the comforts of a modern SUV. The dashboard gets hot, the steering is heavy, the cabin is loud, and the car will break down, but that's the point. We will feel every Kilometre and notice every hill, which is the way life was in 1960 when the Land Rover was made, and when they went on true adventures.

As the saying goes, "It's not an adventure until something goes wrong."

30,000km, 20+ Countries, 1 Old Landy.

From the red dirt of the Outback to the mountains of Central Asia and beyond, the route is a logistical puzzle. We've broken the journey into seven distinct phases.

Phase 1: Australia Phase 2: Indonesia and Borneo Phase 3: SE Asia Phase 4: China Phase 5: Silk Road Phase 6: Europe Phase 7: UK

The Ultimate Homecoming

You might wonder, why end this epic 30,000km trek in the middle of England?

Because, for this old girl, Birmingham was her birthplace.

In 1960, the Series 2 rolled off the production line at the legendary Lode Lane factory in Solihull. Since then, she's survived the war and jungles of Vietnam, decades of Australian sun, and a total nut-and-bolt resurrection in a Brisbane garage.

Peanut's Perspective

"Time to get out of the house and hit the road!  I don't need food, I don't need a litter tray and I don't need a passport.  Easy"

Landy Trivia
  • The ARN: 111-387 (my Landy) served with the 131st Divisional Locating Battery during the Vietnam War.
  • Wheelbase: 109 inches of British engineering and a bit more added by the Aussie Army.
  • Top Speed: 90km/h (eventually).

After spending 3 years restoring a Series Land Rover, and then spending one year converting her and building a 4WD campervan, we are now going on the ultimate adventure and driving from Australia to the UK.  Join us as we drive a Series 2, ex-army Land Rover across the globe.
