Shipping a Car From Darwin to Dili

Overland shipping transit route mapping Darwin to Dili via Singapore

The First International Leap: Transporting a 4WD Vehicle to Timor-Leste

After testing every nut and bolt on the Australian Odyssey, the next challenge will begin at East Arm Wharf in Darwin. This 450-nautical-mile journey will be the gateway to the "Islands and Volcanoes" on the next leg of our long overlanding road trip driving from Australia to the UK, tracing back to our Land Rover's birthplace in Birmingham.

Shipping a vehicle from Australia to East Timor and then driving into Indonesia is more than just driving it onto a boat and sailing off into the sunset. It is, sadly, a complex technical dance of biosecurity, government paperwork, and timing. For the Landy (ARN 111-387), this leg represents the first time she will leave Australian soil since she returned to Sydney after her service in the Vietnam War.

How to Ship a Car From Darwin to Dili

If you are researching this for yourself, you will find that although you can almost see Timor-Leste from Darwin's northern beaches (we... sort of), shipping a vehicle from Darwin to Dili actually involves a 7,000km detour. Currently, there are very few direct services (if any at all) and there aren't any RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) options either, meaning most cargo must be containerized and routed through Singapore. Shipping this relatively short distance unfortunately forces your vehicle to travel via the ANL/Swire PAX service hubs in Singapore before heading back south to Dili. For overlanders, "The Dili Dash" becomes a "Singapore Slingshot," meaning any eco-friendly credits you banked up by rolling down hills and keeping your speed low will be promptly wiped out.

The next thing you will notice is that major shipping lines tend to avoid dealing with individuals. You will need to coordinate through an international freight forwarding company. This adds to the cost, but it does make the customs paperwork much easier as you can hand over complex customs and transit issues directly to specialists.

From our reaserch, there are few freight forwarding companies to contact include:

How Much Does It Cost To Ship a Car From Darwin to Dili?

As is typical with Australian logistics, leaving the country by ocean freight is expensive. We will need a 20ft High-Cube container, and the best quote we have received so far is Around AUD $8,000 for end to endshipping. Compared to standard RoRo ferries elsewhere in the world, this cost is astronimical, so consider it as your beloved vehicle is traveling Business Class.

How Long Does Ocean Freight Transit Take?

To ship a 4x4 from Darwin to Dili, it must be secured straped down inside a container and placed onto one of a small number of cargo vessels playing the Darwin - Singapore - Surabaya - Dili - Darwin route via ANL or Swire. Consequently, actual sea transit time sits around 16 to 17 days, depending on vessel speed and port queues. When you factor in that cargo ships only depart Darwin roughly every 10 days, alongside port paperwork clearance times, you should expect the total process to take around **one month**.

This timeline introduces a unique overlanding hurdle: the standard tourist visa-on-arrival in East Timor is only valid for 30 days, meaning you run the risk of overstaying your visa before your vehicle even clears the port. To navigate this, you will likely spend an extended holiday in Darwin and only book your flight to Dili once you confirm the cargo ship is near arrival. Once the ship arrives, expect another few days for container grounding, unstuffing, and customs inspections. Adding to the annoyance of the time delay is impact to the 12 months for the Carent de Passages, which you need to obtain before your vehicle is put into the container. This means that one twelfth of the CPD will be used us before you even put a tyre mark in East Timor.

It is an exercise in extreme patience, though at least you won't get cold waiting in Darwin!

Payment for the Australian side represents the majority of the cost and is relatively straightforward. You are required to pay a deposit, with the remaining balance due within 4 days of your car being shipped out of Darwin. US Dollar payments for the actuall shipping cost must be made in Darwin and they convert it to AUD at a very bad exchange rate.

Pre-Shipment Vehicle Cleaning & Preparation Procedures

Maritime safety and biosecurity laws are incredibly strict. You cannot roll up to the port with a full tank of fuel or Australian outback red dirt caked inside your wheel arches. Every vehicle must be thoroughly cleaned to meet strict international biosecurity standards. If inspectors discover a single seed or a clump of organic soil during the pre-shipment inspection, your vehicle stays in Darwin until resolved. No portable camping fuel is permitted (even empty gas cylinders), and cooking oils or flammable liquids must be completely emptied. They also recommend disconnecting all onboard lithium auxiliary batteries before driving your vehicle into the container, as temperatures inside can climb to extreme heights at sea.

Standard Shipping Container Dimensions

20ft High Cube* 5,900 2,350 2,697 6,058 2,438 2,896 2,400 21,600 24,000

Because the cost variance between 20ft and 40ft containers is often minor, advertising on overlanding forums or Facebook groups can help you find travel partners to split a 40ft container, drastically dropping individual shipping costs.

For our Landy, we need to source a 20ft High-Cube container. Because of our rooftop tent and solar system, the vehicle is just under 2.4 meters tall. We could have secured a standard height container for a little less money, but paying the premium appears to be far better than trying to dismantle our roof setup in the Darwin heat or dropping tire pressures just to clear the door header. On the scale of a global expedition, the cost difference was negligible.

Getting Your CPD Stamped Out in Darwin

First, you must have your vehicle's passport stamped out of Australia. You will need to take your complete port documentation and your Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) to the Australian Border Force / Customs Office in Darwin (Unit 3 / 31 O'sullivans Circuit, East Arm). They operate Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, by appointment only. When booking your slot, you must email copies of your passport, registration, CPD, and booking documents. You also need an itemized packing list of all equipment and tools stored inside the vehicle, with estimated values. After a physical vehicle inspection to verify VINs, chassis numbers, and custom storage setups, they will stamp your CPD. You will need the stamped document next when reclaiming the vehicle in Dili.

Dropping the Vehicle Off at the Port of Darwin

The Darwin port drop-off is a highly coordinated logistical process that must be completed roughly 4 days before your ship is scheduled to depart. You will deliver your vehicle directly to the container loading yard (PJS Customs, 38 Hamaura Road, East Arm). From there, the strict biosecurity checks begin. Inspectors will look for organic matter, seeds, and soil in floor mats, seat folds, and engine bays. A single seed can halt your container shipment entirely.

Managing Fuel Level Rules

The port requires you to have less than 25% fuel in your tanks. This was a fun challenge in our classic Land Rover, as the fuel sender unit doesn't exactly work as originally intended. When checking in, our gauge read nearly empty, which actually means we are nearly full. If it says full, we are empty! We found it simpler to leave more fuel than allowed rather than try to explain the wiring of 1960s British fuel senders to a customs inspector. We took the path of least resistance.

Disconnecting Battery Terminals inside a Container

Before sealing, you must completely disconnect your starting battery as well as any auxiliary lithium batteries in the rear camper setup. Disconnecting the starting engine battery was a true test of flexibility, given there is less than 20cm of space on either side of the car once loaded into the container. After taking a deep breath, I managed to squeeze down the side, prop the bonnet open, and disconnect the cables. Once secured, you lock the doors, take your keys, and the container is officially sealed.

Contacting Dili Port Agents & Customs Clearing

Once your container leaves Darwin, notify your customs agent in Timor-Leste of your vessel's ETA. This helps lock in clearing rates before your vehicle arrives behind port fences. Take physical cash with you; USD is the official currency of Timor-Leste and is required for all port payments.

Our local clearing charges in Dili totaled $1,262.74 USD, broken down as:
Local Port Tax: $6.00 | ANL Local Charges: $433.48 | Timor Port Charges: $302.76 | Agent Customs Clearance/Handling: $450.00 | Import Documentation: $75.00
