The Moment of Truth

1st May 2026

After 3 years of restoration and months of building out the camper interior, it is time for this Landy to finally hit the road for our first small multi-night expodition in South East Queensland. The days are now cooler and the nights are getting chilly, however, hopfully this is the start of many more adventures to come. Since the LandyRover has been registered, We have have been on the back of 3 tow trucks and broken down 4 times. No more fighting with mechanial issues (I hope) and no more "backyard camping. 500KM of road and gravel is planned"

It is time to hit the road and for the Landy to start Roving the world again.

Watch our Entire Route

The Journey

The first leg took us up into the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, heading out toward Maleny and Montville before winding down to Rosemount to camp beside the Petrie Creek. We chose a route specifically designed to test the Landy's climbing ability, the convenience of our onboard toilet and shower tent, and the comfort of the new bed setup. Having met our May 1st deadline, the pressure was finally off and the Landy was ready for the road.

For the second leg, we turned the Landy south, pushing back up onto the Great Dividing Range before dropping down the other side. Bypassing the bustle of Brisbane, we continued toward Kalbar to lose ourselves in the vibrant fields of sunflowers. Our campsite under some gumtrees provided the perfect rural backdrop, complete with a morning visit from a curious local cow herd. Finally, we put the 2.25L engine to the test one last time, climbing back up the steep heights of the range for the final stretch home to the Landy Rover shed.

The Verdict:

"Loud, slow, slightly smelly and absolutely perfect.
The now 66 year old Series 2 (Ex-Army) Land Rover handled the hills better than expected, the cabinets stayed in one piece."

The Challenges:

"The shower didn't work and then it caught fire.
At first the water pump for the hot shower wasn't powerful enough to lift the water up to head height, so, we got a new pump. Then once we had water, the gas shower decided to catch fire and melted the tripod. I guess it could have been worse!"

Shakedown Notes

What worked and what needs a tweak before I start planning our epic 2027 Expedition.

The Wins
  • Bed comfort was spot on.
  • Electrical system handled the fridge.
  • Main water pump and hot water functioned without leaks.
For Next Time
  • Securing everything in the back.
  • Storage, or lack of it.
  • The gas shower was a disaster - It caught fire.
