- The Australian Odyssey -

"We are not just taking a three-month 'long service leave' to find ourselves, we have already found ourselves, and it turns out that we are actually overlanders trapped in the bodies of office workers.

The plan is relatively simple, if slightly unhinged: no longer having a house, handing in the work ID badges, and quitting the 9-to-5 grind for a 24/7 grind of a different kind (mostly caused by not having a synchromesh on first and second gear).

In Phase 1 of our epic journey, we will be heading to Darwin, but just going the long way round to see Australia and try and time the weather seasons.

The Phase One "General Plan"

The journey will start in Brisbane, because that is where we live. We will start off in the centre of Brisbane and parked next to the 'not so' world famous "Brisbane sign", with the city in the background. From there, we will be off! We won't start a timer, but we will reset the odometer. We hope to leave no later than April 2027.

For Phase One and the Australian odyssey, we are treating the Australian continent as one giant shakedown track on the newly restored Land Rover, whilst we still have roadside recovery and full car insurance.

Departing Brisbane, we will head inland and cross into New South Wales via Moree, before taking a slight detour to explore the opal fields of Lightning Ridge. From there, we will navigate down through NSW into Victoria, targeting the historic goldfields of Bendigo and Ballarat, whilst intentionally steering completely clear of Melbourne in mid-winter. (I never really understood why people like Melbourne. Each to their own though!).

Next, we turn northwest into South Australia, passing through Port Augusta before hanging a sharp left to cross the vast, isolated expanse of the Nullarbor Plain and in search of some warmer weather. Once across, we will reward ourselves by navigating through Western Australia's beautiful beaches and premium wine areas, which marks the perfect milestone to drop the oil and give the Landy its very first comprehensive field service, with the aim of not causing an Environmental 'spillage'.

From the vineyards, we will crawl all the way up the spectacular coast of Western Australia, ultimately tracking northeast across the Kimberley into the Northern Territory. The targeted aim is to hit Darwin right in the middle of the tropical dry season (August). This timing gives us the vital buffer window needed to finalize our international shipping logistics and sort through the critical Carnet de Passages paperwork required to secure a container spot and send the Landy across the water to Dili, Timor-Leste. Plus, another oil change to celebrate the end of Phase 1 of our Journey and nearly 9000KM travelled.


Will the Landy make it?
Absolutely.
Will she break down in some slightly awkward locations? Absolutely.

But this old girl, (Army Registration Number 111-387), was forged in the 1960s and built exactly for this kind of nonsense. Afterall, she has already survived the Vietnam war followed by working on a farm and 15+ years sitting under a tree.

The way We navigate
The 'Tortoise' Strategy

Capping speed at 85km/h isn't lack of ambition; it's respect for 1960s metallurgy. Slow and steady will win the race (not that we are in a race)

Weight vs. Wattage

We have installed a 12v solar plant, roof-top-tent and a kitchen into a mobile "garden shed" on wheels. The brakes need to somehow stop 2.5 tonnes in weight.

How long will Phase 1 take?

Basically, as long as it takes, but we need to be quick. Timing is key for this phase of the journey, due to Australia being a HUGE country with distinct seasons. We don't want to be caught in the desert in summer (minimal aircon) or entering the northern wet season in a leaky car (we only have one umbrella), plus it would add to the long list of things that make a 1960 Land Rover uncomfortable.

Landy Rover 8 Rules of the Road:
  • 1 Go easy on the old girl. No more than 90Km/h
  • 2 If we like somewhere, we stay for a bit. If we don't like it, we move on.
  • 3 No more than 300 or 400km per day.
  • 4 Check the engine oil every day.
  • 5 Change the engine oil every 5000km.
  • 6 Investigate weird noises.
  • 7 No driving at night (you can't see anything anyway).
  • 8 Have a fun time!


Vehicle Preparation

The 10,000km+ Transcontinental Challenge

Status: Almost Ready

Taking Our Land Rover (ARN 111-387) from a tree in Dalby to the Silk Road required more than just a standard restoration. To survive Phase 1 (the 10,000km+ Australian Shakedown), we focused on three critical areas of mechanical reliability:

Drivetrain & Power
  • 2.25L Petrol Engine: Full strip-down and rebuild to original military specs for ease of field repair.
  • 3.54 Differentials: Swapped to improve highway cruising speeds and fuel economy across the Nullarbor. These are bad on hills though.
  • Heavy Duty Cooling: Upgraded radiator and switch controlled tropical fan to handle the 40°C+ SE Asian and Aussie heat.
The Camper Setup
  • Dual Battery System: Custom 12V wiring to power the fridge, hot water, lighting and charge camera gear in the bush.
  • Roof Top Tent: For when motels and hotels are not available, plus to help us comply with our AU$100 per night accommodation budget.
  • Onboard Sanitation: We have a toilet!!!, plus a shower tent for complete self-sufficiency in remote camps.

Note for car fans: The design of this Land Rover (and old Land Rovers in general) is "Field Serviceability." We have avoided modern cars with computers or complex electronics, ensuring that if something breaks in the middle of the Simpson Desert or in Inner Mongolia, it can be fixed with a basic set of spanners, a large hammer and a lot of swearing.

After spending 3 years restoring a Series Land Rover, and then spending one year converting her and building a 4WD campervan, we are now going on the ultimate adventure and driving from Australia to the UK.  Join us as we drive a Series 2, ex-army Land Rover across the globe. Our first challenge is getting from Brisbane to Darwin. The second challenge is paying for a Carnet de Passages, followed by shipping the car from Darwin to Dili!
