Building an Off-Road Camper

Back Roof Lining

The back roof lining is something that, hopefully, blocks a lot of the radiant heat from the sun and also makes the back of the Landy look lighter and brighter. After multiple searches on the internet and seeing some people use acoustic panels with wooden slats on it, I decided to make a bright white version for the back of the Landy Rover.

On the bare metal ceiling, I installed self-adhesive rubber and foil insulation/sound deadening material (from AliExpress) and then secured a thin black plastic 'utility board' (TunnelCore brand), which is super lightweight, very thin and flexible for the curved sides of the roof.(Sheets were 1200mm x 900mm x 3mm)

I then purchased pre-primed, pine 'moulding slats', 66mm, 11mm, 5400mm and cut each one into 2.0m length (Sadly quite a bit of wastage, but that will be used elsewhere), which were then painted white and then countersunk 18mm stainless steel screws into the slats and into the ceiling bracing (Don't want to screw into the roof itself!). The screw holes in the wood were filled, and then a second light coat of white paint was applied.

For lighting, I purchased 4 x 12v LED strip lighting from eBay and screwed it along the side of the roof and hidden out of sight. When the switch is flicked on the dashboard, the light shines up onto the white roof panels. Very Pretty!

Shopping List

2 x Sheets of TunnelCore (Black) - 2250x1220mm (I had lots left over after this!).

4 x rolls of self-adhesive rubber and silver foil insulation (AliExpress) (2m x 50cm.)

10 x Primed pine wood moulding (66mm wide, 11m thick and 5.4m long) - Cut in to 2m lengths, with 1.4m left over.

A spare tin of white primer, to paint the cut ends of the pre-primed wood.

1 x litre of 'Vivid White' paint.

100 x 18mm 8g screws (Stainless Steel) to secure the wood through the black TunnelCore and into the aluminium struts on the roof. (Not through the roof!).
